This is a trailer for our independent investigative documentary on Latvia today, as the holiday brochures will never tell it. Inspired by our personal encounters, as a returning Latvian citizen and first-time British visitor; who ended up on the front page of the national press after writing an open letter to Latvia's president in 2005.
Corrections: The subtitle 'The fight for Latvia goes on.' should read '...went on.' The figures for those no longer able to vote is now 20% not 30% - many of those unable to vote emmigrated from Latvia.

Promotional video "Sounds Like Latvia" features what could become a memorable trademark for the city of Riga - talking Art Nouveau statues that introduce Latvia as a place for fun, business and excitement.
The fast-paced 5-minute video was produced by "Style masters studio" and presented to the Latvian media and diplomatic corps by Foreign Minister Artis Pabriks during a special preview presentation at the Berg Hotel on October 23rd. The musical video will be publicly available for viewing and down-loading on the LI web-site on October 27, 2006.
The video was created for use by government governmental institutions, state agencies, embassies and nongovernmental organizations in conjunction with conferences, exhibits and other international events. Directed by Ivo Kalpenieks, the video expands on Latvia's tourism slogan "The Land that Sings" by conveying the sights and sounds of Latvian nature, business and tourism. Riga's familiar Jugenstil architecture comes to life as the distinctive stone faces introduce each segment of the video.

A documentary features of the illegal Soviet military occupation of the Baltic states in 1940. This unusual film, which illuminates communist methods of internal subversion and conquest, includes rare scenes of Stalin and other Soviet leaders attending closed Kremlin meetings, and examines the criminal background of the Latvian nationals who "invited" the Soviets into that country and subsequently assumed high communist government posts.
In August 1939, Hitler and Stalin signed a treaty called the "Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact" to make Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union allies and divide Europe between them.
In September 1939, Hitler invaded Poland from the west and Stalin invaded Poland from the east, starting World War II.
In late September 1939, Stalin threatening to invade and occupy Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania if they did not permit him to maintain military bases there. He promise to honor their sovereignty. After Poland's fate, the three Baltic countries saw no alternative but to yield.
In June 1940, the Soviets broke their promises, took over the Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian governments, and killed or deported virtually all political and business leaders. Stalin subsequently declared that the Baltic countries had "volunteered" to become part of the Soviet Union.
