It takes place in a broken down future world where the journey of the main character mimics many themes in the song's lyrics. I originally wrote the lyrics describing the certain decay of the world around us. While more and more people pursue meaningless relationships and desire for material things, I've realized that we have "nothing left" in common. Mieux que personne, Keren Ann sait que l'inspiration brute n'est qu'une partie du processus de la création. Au-delà des accords et de la mesure, il existe d'autres dimensions : marier les mots et les notes de musique n'est que le début du processus. "Le vrai challenge pour moi aujourd'hui est tout ce qui a à voir avec le son et la production" insiste Keren Ann. Les arrangements et la production de "Keren Ann" regorgent de trouvailles subtiles inspirées, et c'est cet aspect de la création que son nouvel album met en exergue. "Lay Your Head Down", par exemple, est propulsé par des claquements de mains, un harmonica et des cordes qui déboulent sous un riff de guitare en boucle et une voix divine. Des chœurs éthérés flottent à travers les phrases de trompette et le piano presque transparent de "Liberty", tandis que "It Ain't No Crime", avec ses guitares sales et sa batterie distordue qui tourbillonne, se veut plus direct. De même, "Harder Ships Of The World" ou "It's All A Lie" révèlent de nouvelles facettes de l'évolution artistique de Keren Ann. Keren Ann a souhaité repartir de zéro en mettant un point d'honneur à mieux comprendre comment les sons étaient manipulés et se superposaient. A la tête d'un véritable arsenal de préamplis et compresseurs vintage, et également rompue aux technologies les plus modernes, elle a constaté que dans son home-studio, les possibilités étaient infinies. Un endroit ou un moment peuvent aussi influencer la manière dont une composition évolue et Keren Ann a tenu compte de ces facteurs. Alors que, de certaines chansons, émane la saveur urbaine de ses premières œuvres, d'autres ("Liberty", "Lay Your Head Down") s'ouvrent comme de grands horizons vierges. Le mélange de flûte, de guitare western spaghetti et de piano sur "Where No Endings End" témoigne d'une austérité presque médiévale. Certains titres sont confinés, d'autres ont un son rock énorme. Le matériel de départ a beau avoir été bricolé dans son home-studio, rien ne sonne "fait à la maison" dans "Keren Ann". Keren Ann a également approché le chant de manière différente. Alors que les vocaux de "Nolita" avaient été enregistrés dans une pièce sombre pour en accentuer le caractère intime, elle s'ouvre ici plus volontiers, comme en concert, après avoir choisi des tonalités qui correspondent exactement à son registre Au départ, l'artiste née en Israël avait prévu de faire un plus long break avant d'enregistrer un nouvel album. Mais sa muse en a décidé autrement. La matière brute pour "Keren Ann" lui est venue rapidement, en deux phases d'écriture particulièrement prolifiques. Globe-trotteuse, elle a enregistré des titres en Islande, à Los Angeles, à Paris, New York et Israël. Ayant choisi d'accorder une telle d'importance à l'agencement des chansons et aux sonorités de "Keren Ann", elle se devait de trouver la personne adéquate pour son mixage et a sollicité Joe Barresi (Tool, Queens Of The Stone Age), dont elle avait pu lire le nom sur des disques qu'elle trouvait particulièrement impressionnants. "C'est parfois difficile de faire sonner une chanson avec juste une guitare et une voix, conclue Keren Ann, mais je voulais que le disque ait également cette couleur et qu'il soit mon Disneyland avec une chorale des cordes et toutes ces drôles de percussions. J'ai tenu à pendre tous les éléments sonores et jouer avec eux au maximum. C'était vraiment comme réaliser une peinture avec du son."
