Descripción:OAKLAND, Calif., October 29, 2008 -- Even when Chris Paul's game is decidedly off, he's still capable of carrying the New Orleans Hornets.
The Golden State Warriors no longer have a point guard like that, and the players Baron Davis left behind couldn't quite match Paul's messy magic.
Paul drove for the go-ahead layup with 19.4 seconds left and finished with 21 points and 11 assists in the Hornets' perilous 108-103 victory Wednesday night.
After going 7-0 in the NBA's first unbeaten preseason in six years, New Orleans stayed perfect despite falling apart down the stretch against Golden State. After Paul's jumper gave the Hornets a six-point lead with 5:47 left, they went nearly four minutes without scoring -- including two open jumpers missed by Paul -- while the Warriors took a 101-100 lead on a jumper by Corey Maggette, who had 27 points in his Golden State debut.
But the Hornets' All-NBA point guard put them back ahead twice in the final 65 seconds, including his driving layup through the heart of Golden State's defense. Paul seemed more frustrated than encouraged while he slumped at his locker, still in uniform while watching highlights of the Phillies' World Series victory.
"I felt like I put us in that situation," said Paul, who went 3-for-10 in the second half. "I had a lot of shots I normally make, and I missed them. Then I fouled [Golden State] and let them get ahead. This was an ugly game, but for an opener, we'll take it."
David West led New Orleans with 24 points, while Peja Stojakovic added 16.
Stephen Jackson scored 26 points and Kelenna Azubuike added 17 for the Warriors, who blew numerous opportunities to take charge late in their third straight season-opening loss, but still came out encouraged simply by hanging with the Hornets.
"We played at a high level the whole game," said Jackson, who played all 48 minutes and got ample time at point guard. "We made a lot of mistakes, but that's to be expected. I'm happy with my team."
After Paul's go-ahead layup, Jackson's simple inbounds pass to Al Harrington went out of bounds. Stojakovic then hit two free throws before a missed 3-pointer by Harrington, who struggled with 5-of-17 shooting one day after publicly requesting a trade.
Harrington waffled on his trade request after the game, saying he simply wanted to play major minutes. He played 42 against New Orleans.
"For us to win, I need to be more productive," Harrington said. "I think everybody knows that."
Golden State dropped to 2-5 in its last seven openers, all at home. The Warriors clearly could have used Davis down the stretch, but they'll have to get used to life without him.
"We can't think about that," Jackson said. "We've got to go with what we've got."
New Orleans returns much of the same cast from the most successful team in franchise history, but added two-time NBA champion James Posey, who had 11 points. The Hornets won 56 games and the Southwest Division title before reaching the playoffs' second round, and most experts consider them a title contender -- even after a mediocre opening effort.
"Great finish, but I hope that all of them don't start off this way," coach Byron Scott said. "We got a little bit more aggressive, and our communication got better in the last few minutes. I was shocked [Paul] missed those two wide-open shots, but he responded in the right way."
Golden State started the season without the top two scorers from last season's 48-34 team, the winningest club that failed to make the playoffs in the past quarter-century. Davis is with the Clippers after opting out of his deal, and Monta Ellis is suspended without pay until early December while he recovers from his infamous leg injury in a motorized scooter accident.
Oakland native DeMarcus Nelson was the Warriors' starting point guard, parlaying a strong training camp into the chance to become the team's first undrafted free agent rookie to start on opening night since the club moved to the Bay Area in 1962. After Stojakovic hit three jumpers over him in the first three minutes, Nelson was pulled for Azubuike -- but he returned with a handful of strong plays in the second quarter, finishing with six points in 14 minutes.
Game notes
Warriors coach Don Nelson celebrated the start of his 30th NBA season by signing a two-year contract extension through 2011. Nelson is 52 wins shy of tying Lenny Wilkens' league record for career coaching victories. ... Jackson started the 450th game of his NBA career. ... Golden State's Andris Biedrins fouled out with 14 points and 12 rebounds.

Descripción:SAN ANTONIO, May 8, 2008 (AP) - The San Antonio Spurs' Big Three congregated around the scorer's table during a timeout in the fourth quarter, not long before they put the game away for good.
Tim Duncan patted Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili. They all laughed.
The NBA's defending champions were not going into an 0-3 hole against the New Orleans Hornets.
Parker and Ginobili scored 31 points each and Duncan added 16 points and 13 rebounds as the Spurs beat the Hornets 110-99 in Game 3 of the Western Conference semifinals on Thursday night.
"We know that going 3-0 - it's never been done to come back like that,'' said Ginobili, who along with Parker consistently got to the rim. "Today, for us, it was a Game 7. We knew if we didn't win today, it was almost over. So we had a different approach. We played with more passion, more edge.''
The Hornets still have a 2-1 series lead. Game 4 is Sunday night in San Antonio.
Chris Paul, still almost unstoppable, led the Hornets with 35 points and nine assists. David West had 23 points and 12 rebounds for New Orleans, which was dominant in the first two games of the series.
With the Spurs' win, the home teams are 10-0 in the four conference semifinal series.
"You got to give them a lot of credit,'' Hornets coach Byron Scott said. "I thought they played a lot more aggressive tonight. A lot more physical. Basically kind of took us right out of our game. I thought we lost our composure tonight a little bit as well.''
After trading leads all night, the Spurs led 83-78 entering the fourth quarter.
Ginobili, the league's top sixth man, started for the first time this postseason and led a Spurs charge early in the final quarter. Left alone, he hit a wide-open 3 and was fouled by Bonzi Wells, who scrambled at him to guard the shot. Ginobili's free throw put San Antonio up 87-82, and another 3 by Ginobili 38 seconds later made it 90-84.
New Orleans got within 90-88 before the Spurs took over, playing out the fourth quarter better than they have played all series.
"They made a lot more shots,'' Paul said. "We got away from our defensive game plan somewhat. We didn't defend as well as we did the first two games.''
San Antonio went on an 11-0 burst to take a 101-88 lead with 5:57 to play.
The Spurs couldn't stop Paul, but West missed three of four free throws and the Hornets got no closer than 10 points in the latter half of the quarter.
The Spurs outscored the Hornets 27-21 in the fourth with Parker and Ginobili combining for 17 points.
"We knew that they were going to play better at home. We just didn't respond,'' West said.
Peja Stojakovic, the Hornets' 3-point sharpshooter, was held to eight points on 2-of-7 shooting as he was guarded by San Antonio's Bruce Bowen.
"Chris is going to score regardless. He's got the ball in his hands every single time. Every single play it's Chris Paul,'' said Parker, who had 11 assists. "He's going to score. So we decided to put Bruce on Peja and at least hold somebody down because Peja was killing us.''
The Hornets took an 8-0 lead in the first quarter before the Spurs evened things and started the second quarter down 23-21.
While Bowen was successful in containing Stojakovic in the first half, West and Paul, the stars of Games 1 and 2, were let loose and shot a combined 14-of-21 to account for 30 of the Hornets' points at halftime.
Tyson Chandler dunked alley-oop passes from West, Paul and Wells in the first half, each time quieting the raucous Spurs crowd that took to booing both the officials and the Hornets.
The Spurs led by as many as four points in the second quarter after Michael Finley, who came off the bench because usual reserve Ginobili started, hit a corner 3 to give San Antonio a 41-37 lead.
After Parker hit a jumper with 49 seconds to play in the first half, Stojakovic and Morris Peterson each hit 3s to leave the Spurs down 56-49 with 23 seconds left. But Bowen hit a 3 and Ginobili hit a buzzer-beating jumper to bring San Antonio within 56-54 at halftime.Duncan was quiet in the first half with just five points as New Orleans' double-teams continued to hamper him.
In the third the Spurs did not break down as they did in Games 1 and 2 when New Orleans took control. Duncan, Parker and Ginobili took over, scoring all but three of San Antonio's 29 points in the period.
"We were waiting for that third quarter, that it would be on our side this time,'' San Antonio's Fabricio Oberto said. "I think we did a pretty good job. It's not the best job we can do.''
But the Hornets wouldn't go away as Paul scored 11 points in the quarter. Late in the period he hit a highlight shot when he flipped up the ball as he spun around and put his back to the basket. He as fouled for the three-point play to bring the Hornets within 77-76.

Descripción:ORLANDO, Fla., April 1, 2008 (AP) -- Peja Stojakovic's streak of consecutive 3-pointers was in jeopardy. He had made at least one in 35 straight games, but through 47 minutes on Tuesday night was 1-for-10 from the field with no 3s.
He was due, and the swingman came through.
Stojakovic scored six points in the final minute -- a clutch 3-pointer and three free throws -- to lift New Orleans past the Orlando Magic 98-97, giving the Hornets their franchise-record 24th road win.
"You have to give yourself a chance," said Stojakovic, eighth on the NBA's career 3-point shooting list. "I always say that. If you don't shoot, you are never going to find out."
Chris Paul had 19 points and 12 assists for the Hornets, Morris Peterson scored 19 points and David West had 18 points and 11 rebounds.
Hedo Turkoglu had 26 points, seven assists and five rebounds for Orlando. Rashard Lewis added 24 points and Dwight Howard had 17 points and 15 rebounds.
Down 98-95 with 9.4 seconds left, the Magic inbounded to Turkoglu. Instead of shooting a 3 to tie, the forward drove the wide open lane for an easy dunk.
The strategy seemed to work. Turkoglu fouled Paul on the inbounds pass, and the All-Star missed both free throws, so Orlando had another chance.
Down one point with 6.1 seconds left, Turkoglu inbounded to Lewis, who met two defenders off the dribble. He passed to Keyon Dooling, but his buzzer-beating jumper was short.
"The game could have went any way, one break here, one break there," Dooling said.
Orlando led 53-44 at halftime, but the Hornets drew to 59-57 on a 12-0 run over 4 1/2 minutes. Peterson hit consecutive 3-pointers -- six of the 11 points he scored in the quarter.
The Magic built their lead back to 11 in the third on Maurice Evans' 3, but New Orleans stormed back. Paul drove the paint on nearly every possession, collecting five free throws and a jumper that again closed the Hornets within two points.
Neither team led by more than three in the fourth quarter.
"It was just one of those things when sometimes you have a feeling, and I knew Peja was due," Hornets coach Byron Scott said. "He had so many good looks tonight, and I thought he was probably a little tired, too. He's been playing a lot more minutes than I thought I would be playing him at the beginning of the year."
It was Orlando's first game since clinching the Southeast Division on Monday with Washington's loss to Utah -- the franchise's first division title since the 1995-96 season.
New Orleans (51-22) is sitting atop the Western Conference playoff race, but has a long ride to clinch its division. Four teams in the Southwest appear headed to the postseason, and all could conceivably win 50 games. The Hornets won their 50th on Sunday for the first time since 1997-98.
Orlando point guard Jameer Nelson missed his second straight game with a bruised jaw, and forward Brian Cook was out after breaking a finger Monday in practice. Oddly, both got injured in run-ins with Howard, as did Tony Battie, who has missed the whole season after undergoing shoulder surgery in October.
The Hornets improved to 4-1 on a six-game road trip that concludes Wednesday at Miami.
Notes: New Orleans outrebounded Orlando 51-30. West eclipsed the 2,000-rebound mark for his career. ... Howard and Nelson helped sing "Happy Birthday" to Magic CEO Bob Vander Weide on the arena television during a break. Descripción:PHOENIX, October 30, 2008(AP) -- Chris Paul had 20 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds and the New Orleans Hornets held off a rally, then pulled away to beat Phoenix 108-95 Thursday night and spoil the home debut of new Suns coach Terry Porter.
The Hornets, who never trailed, improved to 2-0 on the heels of a season-opening victory at Golden State on Wednesday night.
Peja Stojakovic added 20 points before leaving the game with a sprained right ankle in the first few seconds of the fourth quarter. New Orleans already was without starting center Tyson Chandler, who sprained his right ankle against the Warriors.
Morris Peterson added 21 and David West 18 for New Orleans. James Posey scored 13, including three 3-pointers in the fourth quarter, as the Hornets beat Phoenix for the fifth time in a row. They were 4-0 against the Suns last season.
Steve Nash had 24 points and nine assists, and Amare Stoudemire added 21 points and 12 rebounds for Phoenix. The Suns committed 24 turnovers, resulting in 21 New Orleans points, after only 10 in their victory at San Antonio the previous night.
Down by as many as 16 in the first half and 15 in the third quarter, the Suns scored the first seven points of the fourth to cut the Hornets' lead to 81-76 on rookie Goran Dragic's 9-foot runner with 8:34 to play, his first NBA field goal.
Grant Hill's 17-footer as the shot clock approached zero cut it to 83-80 with 7:08 to play. But Posey sank a 3-pointer, Rasual Butler made another, then Posey hit one again to boost the Hornets' lead to 92-83 with 4:46 left.
Butler's second 3-pointer of the quarter made it 97-87 with 3:08 to go.
New Orleans made its first six shots to take a 14-2 lead.
The Suns made 1-of-7 shots and committed seven turnovers in an ugly first seven minutes of the second quarter. The Hornets, meanwhile, built a 49-33 lead when Shaquille O'Neal was called for goaltending on Paul's shot with three minutes left in the half.
Phoenix went on an 11-2 run to cut it to 51-44 with 41.1 seconds left, but West made two free throws, then Paul sank a 3-pointer with two seconds to play to give New Orleans a 56-44 lead at the break.
The Suns got no closer than 10 in the third quarter and were down 81-69 entering the fourth.
Notes: The Hornets play their home opener Saturday against Cleveland. ... Suns rookie Robin Lopez had three fouls and a turnover in the first 1:35 of the second quarter. ... Phoenix was called for three technicals in the first half - on Stoudemire, Porter and Nash.
