Fagen won't admit it — he's always been extremely reluctant to explain his songs — but it's easy to imagine that Ducornet was the inspiration for one of his band's most famous tunes, ''Rikki Don't Lose That Number.'' ''I remember we had a great conversation and he did suggest I call him, which never happened,'' says Ducornet, now a well-regarded novelist and artist. ''But I know he thought I was cute. And I was cute,'' she laughs. ''I was very tempted to call him, but I thought it might be a bit risky. I was very enchanted with him and with the music. It was so evident from the get-go that he was wildly talented. Being a young faculty wife and, I believe, pregnant at the time, I behaved myself, let's say. Yes, it's UK Eurovision star Daz Sampson and his songwriting partner John Matthews in a previous incarnation which made it into the UK top 10, thanks largely to the support of BBC radio presenter Chris Moyles who made it his record of the week. Indeed, he declared the whole week "Rhinestone Cowboy Week" in an effort to get it to number one but alas it was not to be.
How Daz got Glen to agree to take part in this project is one of the small wonders of the world that make Daz the legend he is today. This video has a lot of stories attached to it, but it's more than my career is worth to disclose them right now...
This is one of 3 videos I shot in Arizona in 2002, and the first video I shot at Goldfield Mining Town, just outside Phoenix, below the Superstitious Mountains.
